Working with Fabric

For the second week of this elective we transferred the the shapes we were using from paper to fabric. From we worked with one size and shape on the stand again. I found the fabric easier to work with as it gathered and draped in a much nicer way. We used three different fabrics, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight. I used lining for my lightweight, curtain lining and Sherborne ( 70% Vicose and 30 % Linen). Here are a few examples of my work with each fabric.

Lightweight

Middleweight

 Heavyweight

Inspiration

Jean Paul Gautier

Gaultier does not like primary colours, he prefers ivory and half tones. His images are tiny but sacrilegious, his cut a little better, his vision breathtaking. He is a designer who has made his reputation by attaching 12" conical breasts to Madonna and putting men in Lycra jumpsuits covered in small diamond shape mirrors. As his fantasies wing their way down the runway, you see Backless T-shirts, cutaway jackets with more space between than fabric, a riot of prints, insanely skirted mens pants and beautiful women. Very little is what one would expect. This sets him apart from other controversial designers

Applying shapes to Drawings.

Here, I took the shapes I made on the stand, traced them out in different sizes and placed them on the body. This is to see how I could come up with different designs from what I had already done.

Shapes!

After doing our drawings and pulling shapes from them, on our second day of fashion we Began to apply them to the mannequin. I really enjoyed this process of bringing a flat 2D piece of paper to a 3D shape around the body. I tried to vary how I used my shapes as much as I could. Here are some examples.
